CHELSEA, MI – A man from Stockbridge trying to sneak out of a Chelsea store with several stolen liquor bottles in his coat instead left the store handcuffed, police said.

Officers were called at 4:22 p.m. on February 19 to a business on the 1200 block of S. Main Street for an attempted shoplifting, in which staff detained the suspect, according to the Police Department. Chelsea.

The 21-year-old suspect was trying to hide several bottles of alcohol in his coat and walk out of the store without paying, police said.

The man was initially submissive with the staff, but turned combative before the police arrived, pushing the staff in an attempt to escape, police said.

The man was arrested and taken to the police department to take his fingerprints before being released, police said.

A report of the incident was sent to the Washtenaw County District Attorney’s Office for review and indictment.
