  • American Idol Season 15 runner-up Avalon Young has announced that she has brain cancer.
  • After having already had brain surgery, she needs a second to completely remove a tumor, as well as radiation and chemotherapy.
  • As a freelance artist, she has minimal insurance and requests medical assistance through a GoFundMe page.

When Avalon Young hit the Top 8 in Season 15 of American Idol, she had no idea that five years later she would use her platform to talk about brain cancer.

Earlier this month, the 26-year-old revealed that after a tumor the size of a peach removed of her brain in February (which took 16 hours of surgery), she received “some of the worst news ever” when doctors informed her that she has cancer, which requires a second surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

“Everything was fine until literally, Thanksgiving week [2020], I started having three seizures a day, which was super intense for me, ”the singer said recently. told TMZ. After doing tons of blood tests that returned to normal, seeing a therapist, and seeing a holistic doctor, an MRI scan revealed a mass tumor on her left frontal lobe.

“When I found out I had a brain tumor I wanted to do a bunch of crap that I had never done before so I shaved my head,” she wrote on Instagram. “I’m trying to act like this hasn’t happened, but it’s something that’s pretty hard to ignore.”

As a freelance artist with minimal insurance, Young’s medical bills are already piling up, which is why his family started a GoFundMe page to hopefully get some financial help.

“The GoFundMe is honestly one of the most important things in my life right now,” she told TMZ. “That’s really all we have to keep us from paying all the medical bills.”

The latest fund update, provided by Young’s mother, revealed that her second surgery is scheduled to take place on May 27. “Radiation therapy and chemotherapy will follow,” one reads. “We are confident that our medical team will continue to work wonders and that Avalon will recover quickly.”

The new surgery will likely be a laser operation, which luckily will be less invasive than the first one that left a large scar on the side of Young’s head.

When the R&B artist announced his diagnosis on Instagram, she was clearly discouraged but optimistic about the future. “It’s unreal to receive this news at the age of 26. Everything is going to be fine, the trip is going to be wild, but I’m ready for it, ”she wrote. “I love you guys very much. F * ck cancer. “
