Meigs Farmer’s Market sets opening day
POMEROY, Ohio – The Meigs County Farmers Market will open for its third season on Saturday, with many returning vendors as well as new faces and activities.
The market will continue to offer fresh fruits and vegetables alongside handcrafted crafts from local artisans. Family activities are also on the program and include family photos on the opening day of the market.
Forty vendors will bring a variety of goods ranging from fruits, vegetables, meat, baked goods, honey and jams, flowering vegetables and plants, beautifully designed jewelry and rugs. Shoppers will also find herbal teas, handmade soaps and candles.
A kids’ corner offers weekly activities, and entrepreneurs 18 and under are encouraged to bring anything they make or grow and be a vendor for the day at the youth booth.
Live music is also on the program, as well as lessons and demonstrations.
Market Manager Stephanie Rife emphasized the importance of the market to the community, but also of the community to the market.
“We’ve had amazing support from everyone, from the vendors, from the artisans, from the business owners and from everyone who comes in to shop,” Rife said. “We want it to be a family place to come, an activity to look forward to on Saturday morning. This place offers something for everyone to enjoy. “
The market recognizes food insecurity in the region and offers several programs to address this concern. At the donation station, people can buy products or donate money to buy them. Market gardeners also make a generous donation to the resort. The produce is sent to local pantries that would otherwise have no fresh produce to offer.
Up to $ 25 will be matched when using SNAP and Produce Perks. The market also accepts WICs, good seniors and good veterans. Buyers are encouraged to visit the market booth for details and a table outlining eligible programs and products before making their selection from sellers.
Rife said everyone she spoke with looked forward to Saturday’s opening.
“The market has grown so much since our first year, and we’re adding things all the time,” Rife said. “Things change every week, new classes and demonstrations are added, the fruits and vegetables change with the season, and our artisans are on rotation, so the market is different from week to week.”
But Rife said there is something that always stays the same, and that is the joy and sense of community that the market brings to those in attendance.
“It has become like family,” she says. “Everyone gets to know each other, from sellers to buyers. People gather here for coffee and stroll together in the market, families come for their weekly produce, children eagerly await activities that are just right for them. Everyone is looking forward to Saturday morning, rain or shine. “
The market will be open for the season from May 1 to October 30, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Pomeroy sea wall. All activities and demonstrations and free for the public.
