Get ready for Buffalo to be back in the Instagram spotlight. A favorite for an Instagram photo is back home.

Shark Girl has made her home in Buffalo since 2014, when she was brought here from the banks of the Ohio River by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. She has since become a hit on Instagram as people from all over the world stopped by to take a photo with the little shark-headed girl.

WHO / WHAT IS SHARKGIRL?

Sharkgirl was created by American artist Casey Riordan Millard and has been featured in his work since 2004. The fiberglass statue that now resides in Canalside was the artist’s first public sculpture.

NOW THAT SHE’S BACK, WHERE DID SHE GO?

Sharkgirl took a mini-vacation to spend much-needed spa time and do some restoration work. This happened just before much of western New York City was shut down due to COVID-19 and with Sharkgirl being a heavily affected item at Canalside, officials decided to keep her at the spa until. this week.

WHAT DID TO SHARKGIRL DURING HER SPA TREATMENT?

Well you might know that Buffalo and western New York are notorious for having snow and ice. During her “Spa” treatment, Sharkgirl received fresh coats of paint, a touch up on some of the wear and tear on her body, and the rock she is perched on has also been touched up.

WHERE CAN I FIND SHARKGIRL?

She is back in the same place she was before going to the spa. It is near the Explore and More Children’s Museum in Canalside.

DOES IT COST ANYTHING TO TAKE A PICTURE WITH SHARKGIRL?

No … photos with Sharkgirl are free. Managers are simply asking you to follow social distancing guidelines while you wait to take your photo
