New 27-inch iMac with ProMotion display slated for Q1 2022

Apple is preparing to launch a new 27-inch iMac with a ProMotion display in early 2022, new claims have been made.

The company has turned the laptop world upside down with the announcement this week of new advanced 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, which threatens to leave the rest of the Mac lineup a little dirty.

Fortunately, we shouldn’t have too long to wait for another spec review. Reliable display analyst Ross Young (via 9to5Mac) tweeted the claim that Apple will launch a new 27-inch iMac in the first quarter of 2022.

OK, tweeted too early. The 27 “MiniLED display will be built into an iMac in Q1’22, not an external monitor. Can see a monitor later. Always variable refresh from 24Hz to 120Hz… Sorry for the confusion!

This new all-in-one will contain the MiniLED and ProMotion display technologies that first appeared in the new MacBook Pro. This latest ProMotion feature will allow the 27-inch iMac to adapt its refresh rate from 24Hz to 120Hz depending on the task.

No mention is made of the internals of the new iMac, but we’d be more than surprised if it didn’t feature something similar to the M1 Pro or M1 Max that impressed us all in the latest MacBook Pro presentation. The recently launched 24in iMac packed the M1 upright, but everything we hear about the 27in model paints the picture of a more pro-inclined all-in-one.

Indeed, Apple is said to be working on a chip with double the number of cores, even of the mighty M1 Max. It remains to be seen whether that will find its way into the new iMac.

About a year ago, Apple established a two-year roadmap for its transition to its own chips. This means that we should have a full Mac Apple M suite by the end of 2022.
