Filipino-American bands compete for Grammy honors – Manila Bulletin
The 2022 Grammys have the most pop music acts with Filipino roots.
In case you missed it, the next Grammy’s in January 2022 will host Olivia Rodrigo, HER, Bruno Mars (as part of the Silk Sonic duo) and Saweetie.
Besides being aces of their respective music, all mentioned have Pinoy roots.
Variety magazine wrote that “Olivia Rodrigo made Grammy history when she became the first Filipino artist and the second youngest artist to be nominated in the top four categories.”
Grammy-winning HER (real name Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson) has also landed eight nominations for the upcoming music awards ceremony.
Saweetie (real name Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper), rapper and platinum record music artist, received two nominations including Best New Artist. The 28-year-old artist has a Filipino-Chinese mother and an African-American father.
Peter Gene Hernandez, alias Bruno Mars, (as part of Silk Sonic with the excellent Anderson .Paak) is aiming for the record of the year with “Leave The Door Open”. Silk Sonic is also nominated for Best R&B Song for “Leave The Door Open.”
Olivia Rodrigo builds on the resounding success “Driving license”. That and the songs from her debut album “Sour”. Rodrigo is nominated for Album OTY, Record OTY, Song OTY and Best New Artist. Olivia Rodrigo is also in the running for Best Music Video for “Good 4 U”.
ELLE got a nod for her album “Back Of My Mind” which is shortlisted for Album of the Year (as well as Best R&B Album), Best R&B Performance for her song “Damage”, the Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Fight For You” and Best Pop Voice for “Sour.” Olivia Rodrigo matched Billie Eilish’s six nominations feat in 2019.
ELLE who won a Grammy for Song of the Year for “I Can’t Breathe” earlier this year and later an Oscar for Best Original Song for “Fight For You” (for Judas and The Black Messiah) has Said in an interview with Variety about winning these major awards, “It means there’s another Filipino girl and a black girl saying ‘I can do that too. “
The 64th Grammy Awards are scheduled live at the Crypto.com Arena (formerly Staples Center) in Los Angeles on January 31, 2022. The awards show will be broadcast live on CBS and is also available to stream live and at the request on Paramount +.
