Insecure Season 5 Episode 6 Recap: “Tired, okay ?!”

Every Monday, the editor of Very Smart Brothas Panama Jackson and contributing freelance writer Shanelle Genai break down the final episode of Season 5 of HBO’s cultural show, Unsafe. OK?! Spoilers ahead.
Panama Jackson: Coyotes on a leash, Issa showing perfect form with babies at the HMO and Nathan acting like a basketball … Finna bouncing? It’s time for another back-and-forth recap session for this final season of Unsafe! And people are “Tired, okay?” And by the people, I mean mostly Issa, who is waiting for these three wordsâ“I love you”– back from NATHANIEL, who not only does not seem to feel love for Issa but talk about diving on LA And he said shit so casually, as if Issa was not there. In other news, Molly’s mom woke up from her stroke, what is good, and do I feel sparks in the air between Molly and my brother Morehouse, Taurean ???
This episode had some genuinely entertaining and endearing moments. Plus, I’m always happy when people get the chance to tell Molly about her. Growth, okay ?! Oh and Crenshawn somehow put Issa in his shoes? I feel like she could have stepped back a little more, but whatever; Telfar earrings on BOOM! First off, how was your Thanksgiving break and what do you think of the episode?
Shanelle Genaï: I love the way you literally touch on almost everything in everyone episode in just a few sentences; have I already told you that? But my Thanksgiving was great! I ate well, I slept well, but above all, I was surrounded by people who love me-wthat’s more than Issa can say in this episode. I mean, damn NATHANIEL: His it difficult to say these three little words? I mean, I guess it’s hard to tell them if you’re not sure you really mean it – which he shouldn’t be since he claims Issa “knows how he feels about her.” Say the words, boy, it doesn’t take much.
I know Molly’s family almost suffered a loss with the family matriarch who suffered this latest stroke, but I really feel like it was Issa’s turn to hug that “L” “this round. Think about it: see Lawrence, Conjugation and baby Elijah in the hospital, then go home to your man who refuses to say “I love you”, THEN have that co-worker whomade you explode double their contempt for you (looking at you, Crenshawnâwith your handsome, angry, Ralph Angel-ringing ass). Issa is 0-50 at this point and I really hate to see him.
G / O Media may earn a commission
Panama Jackson: She is really 0-50. Because even though she won the first daydream, she lost the second like a shit. Like, WHO LOSES IN THEIR OWN DREAMS? Issa, who is it. Let’s talk quickly about NATHANIEL. So I was never a barber, but what was he (or anyone else) supposed to do in this situation? I would love to have a barber step in here because I mean, my mate needed a haircut and he was at his barber. I guess they could all have said “no” and sent it to another barber shop, but I don’t know. Plus, I saw it unfold in real time. Before I lost my hair and ghosted my hairdresser, it was the only way really – the store I was going to had a famous barber who literally came and went as he pleased and had customers waiting all the time. But no one has ever taken his cups. I thought it was crazy then because he had a line of people and they would all keep pushing.
Either way, NATHANIEL said he would take the heat and then when my mate came back and called him crazy and came to pick him up, he’s immediately ready to pack him up and go home (or elsewhere). Plus, who the hell told their boo that they could just get up and move like that AND THEN blame them for being everywhere? (I mean, she is, I suppose, but like I said before: you would think that NATHANIEL would be a little more understanding?)
Shanelle Genaï: Yeah, that barber scene was just disrespectful. How and why would you use someone’s bipolar diagnosis against them ??! I guess I see why they call him Suge. But anyway your last point is exactly why I have a problem being #TeamNissa. NATHANIEL literally enjoys calling everyone on their perceived issues, but the minute someone calls him or even puts a mirror in front of him to look at himself and his behavior, his first instinct is to run or get on the defensive. I am sorry, but the lack of empathy he shows is completely off-putting at times and Issa deserves better. I don’t think they are compatible. I mean, did you see the sex scene? It didn’t work at all. I need them to go their separate ways quickly.
Or get yourself a pet coyote, because it’s clearly embarrassing. Maybe that will help shake things up.
Panama Jackson: I am definitely Pet Coyote Gang Gang. I think my neighbor might have one, Actually. And yes, that sex scene was blah, which speaks straight to your point.
Shifting gears, as much shit I give Molly, it’s good to see her become more likeable as a person. She’s human and she works on her and talks to people and something. Do you think Molly and Taurean are where this show ends in Molly’s verse? We only have four episodes left, right?
Shanelle Genaï: The jury is still out for me on the pet coyote, but as far as Molly and Taurean go, I’m really a little excited to see where this could go. I also love that she’s willing to explore this with someone (relatively) new and not spin the block with an old flame. I don’t know if this is the end, per se, but if it is, I’m not mad at it. With only four episodes left, I’m struggling to find a resolution that everyone satisfies. I know real life Issa said she had to go back to Dto do the final because things were wrong with her, so here is hoping that whatever happens to our favorites it will be a fitting ending for everyone involved. How do you think things will end?
Panama Jackson: I’m with you, honestly. I don’t see where this season is going and it’s more than halfway there so I can’t really predict where it might end up. Maybe that’s the point? Maybe they’re just living the life and that’s it. Guess Lawrence and Issa are having a last talk or something, especially since NATHANIEL doesn’t give what needs to be given and Issa has Lawrence on her brain to some extent. I don’t know, mate. I’m sure they’re trying to take us somewhere and we’ll be there watching. One last thought?
Shanelle Genaï: Other than the fact that Crenshawn’s “Integrity” sweatshirt was really ugly? Nope. But I hope we start to pick this up Unsafe’s to put in this final season relatively soon. People need some sort of closure, okay ?! See you next week…
New episodes of Unsafe premieres every Sunday at 10 p.m. ET on HBO and HBOMax.
