Grand Decatur, Georgia – Over 1,500 people pay to support the news Decaturish.com provides to our community.
Michelle Hiskey is one of them.
Hiskey is a freelance writer, writing coach, and single mom. She lives in the unincorporated DeKalb County near Decatur. Her two adult children attended DeKalb County schools.
Hiskey attaches great importance to local journalism. She began her writing career in high school with her local newspaper in suburban Washington, DC
“Watergate has drawn a lot of attention to journalism and I have been fortunate enough to learn the trade alongside great editors,” Hiskey said. “Supporting quality reporting in my community is an easy decision for me. Those in power in our community are not going to hold themselves accountable, and we need a thriving press like Decaturish to do it. “
“The people who are afflicted in our community will also suffer without a thriving press to tell their stories,” she added. “Social media is a line of advice, not a trust line. Seriously, we all benefit from a thriving press.
After seeing Decaturish staff come forward to cover local news, Hiskey realized that Decaturish was the real deal and wanted to support the post.
“Very few people understand the challenge of local news,” Hiskey said. “You report people you see in the grocery store or at a red light. You are always away from your worst critics. It takes a lot of dedication, compassion and courage. As a freelance writer, I know that news content takes a lot of work and that work should be paid.
Decaturish provides reliable community media coverage as well as greater emotional connection and greater investment in the community, Hiskey said.
“This community is fortunate to have Decaturish and I want to be a little[ish] part of keeping Decaturish, ”she said.
Local journalism holds powerful people accountable, which is why others should support local news, Hiskey said.
“The press can do it better than the general public, and why our First Amendment is the first,” Hiskey said. “Very few people can go to every city council meeting, look at the court file or look at the police register. Why would they do it? When we don’t have reliable sources like Decaturish to keep tabs on the people in power, they will abuse their power.
