The Steamboat Pilot & Today has added Tom Skulski to the team of newsroom reporters.
Skulski, who is from New England, will cover sports and outdoor activities for the pilot. The sports post opened with Shelby Reardon who was promoted to deputy editor in April. Skulski’s first day was Tuesday, June 21.
“Tom’s passion for the sport and enthusiasm for Steamboat Springs is what set him apart during the hiring process,” editor Eli Pace said of the pilot’s new recruit. “He may have a bit of work to do to get to grips with some of our winter sports, but I’m sure Tom will catch on quickly and be a great asset to the Driver and to our readers.”
Skulski graduated from Temple University in May with a 3.6 GPA and a bachelor’s degree in journalism. While in college, he wrote for Inside the Phillieswho is part of the Fan Nation branch of Sports Illustrated, in addition to being a writing intern for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod baseball league.
During the summer of 2021, Skulski attended every YD Red Sox game, interviewing players and coaches while producing coverage that included post-game analysis. Skulski also managed the scoreboard in home games.
Beyond that, Skulski has been a freelance writer for Stampede Blue.which focuses on the Indianapolis Colts of the NFL, and as an on-air host of various sports broadcasts with WHIP Radio at Temple University.
Other positions Skulski has held in the past include camera operator, audio technician and umpire for Yalesville Little League in Wallingford, Connecticut.
“Being someone who has developed an appreciation for sports data and statistics over the years, I have always understood the importance of keeping careful records and writing stories that encompass great sports moments,” wrote Skulski in his cover letter when he applied for the position.
“Sport wouldn’t be what it is today without the endless catalog of stories, games and memorabilia created and presented by the media,” he continued. “Whether it’s writing, research, editing, production or any other assistance required of me, I believe my work ethic and experience will prove that I am up to the task. .”
Skulski is an avid Boston Red Sox baseball fan. He also enjoys golfing and hiking with his family, who live in Connecticut.
He said he applied for the job at Steamboat in part because of the wide variety of sporting events he will be able to cover and because of the Rocky Mountain scenery.
“I think there was something unique about Steamboat because I will be able to pursue my passion as a sports journalist and cover so many different events outside of more traditional sports,” Skulski said. “It was a big draw…and the beauty – the mountains and everything – it’s something I’ve never seen where I come from.”
