Urgent reminder: Banana Boat sunscreen may contain cancer-causing chemicals
Banana Boat sunscreens are being recalled because they potentially contain benzene, a dangerous chemical.
With the summer heat gripping much of the United States right now, many people are applying sunscreen before going outside. Unfortunately, a voluntary recall was issued earlier this week for a popular brand. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), certain sunscreens “Banana Boat products are being recalled after traces of a chemical known to cause cancer were found inside bottles.”
For now, the recall includes Banana Boat SPF 30 Hair and Scalp Spray because “after benzene, a human carcinogen, was found in the propellant that sprays the sunscreen but not the cream sunscreen itself,” the FDA said. The federal agency added:
“Benzene has the potential to lead to cancers including leukemia and bone marrow blood cancer and life-threatening blood disorders.”
Edgewell Personal Care Company is the company that manufactures Banana Boat products. He noted that the recalled sunscreen products had been shipped to retailers nationwide and were available for purchase online. Lot numbers affected by the recall include 20016AF, 20084BF and 21139AF.
The company released the following statement:
“Banana Boat is voluntarily recalling three production batches of Banana Boat Hair & Scalp SPF 30 Sun Sprays due to traces of benzene. We know you love our products and we are issuing this recall out of caution. It is important to note that no other lots of Hair & Scalp (before or after these lot codes) and no other Banana Boat products are affected by this recall and can continue to be used by consumers safely and as intended.
At this time, the affected products are being removed from store shelves and customers are urged to stop using them. Consumers who have the products can request a refund here.
